In May 1999 she accompanied the MP Merve Kavakci, who took the oath in the National Assembly wearing an Islamic headscarf. On pronouncing the dissolution of the party in June 2001, the Constitutional Court decided to strip the applicant of her MP status, pursuant to Article 84 of the Constitution, and prohibited her from founding, joining or leading another political party for a period of five years.
