In 1974, when Turkish armed forces took possession of northern Cyprus, the applicants had to flee to the southern part of the island, leaving behind all their possessions. They have been prevented from recovering their properties since. The application raises similar issues to the Loizidou case (judgment of 18 December 1996, Reports 1996-VI).
