He was an outstanding Judge, who commanded great respect and deep affection from his fellow judges and members of the Registry. He will be sorely missed both for his legal expertise and his profound humanity. Our thoughts and sympathy go to his family.”   Mr Jörundsson was born on 24 September 1934 in Reykjavík. He was a lecturer in the Faculty of Law in the University of Iceland from 1967 to 1969 and became Professor of Law in 1969. He was twice appointed to the Supreme Court, in 1983 and 1987. He was elected Parliamentary Ombudsman for Iceland in 1988 and again in 1992 and 1996. Since 1 November 1998 it has sat as a full-time Court composed of an equal number of judges to that of the States party to the Convention. The Court examines the admissibility and merits of applications submitted to it. It sits in Chambers of 7 judges or, in exceptional cases, as a Grand Chamber of 17 judges. The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe supervises the execution of the Court’s judgments.Citations
