From 1 March 2006 the judges will be divided into five Sections (at present four). The Court’s main judicial formations, Committees of three judges and Chambers of seven, are constituted within the Sections. The Court also sits as a Grand Chamber of 17 judges.   Judge Lorenzen was born in 1944 in Copenhagen. He studied law at the University of Aarhus. From 1969 to 1970 he was Assistant Professor of public law at the University of Aarhus and of constitutional law at the University of Copenhagen from 1970 to 1974. He was Legal Adviser at the Ministry of Justice from 1970 to 1978. From 1978 to 1982 he was Head of Department at the Parliamentary Ombudsman’s Office. He sat as Judge of the Court of Appeal of Western Denmark from 1982 to 1992 and then as its President from 1992 to 1994. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Denmark from 1994 to 1998. He was a member of the European Commission of Human Rights from 1995 to 1999 and has been a Judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 1 November 1998. Since 1 November 1998 it has sat as a full-time Court composed of an equal number of judges to that of the States party to the Convention. The Court examines the admissibility and merits of applications submitted to it. It sits in Chambers of 7 judges or, in exceptional cases, as a Grand Chamber of 17 judges. The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe supervises the execution of the Court’s judgments. [1] The seat of judge in respect of Monaco is currently vacant.Citations
