His term of office begins on 1 September of this year. He will replace Lucius Caflisch, who is retiring on reaching 70, the age-limit for the Court’s judges [1] .   Mr Villiger was born in 1950 and studied and taught law at the University of Zurich, where he was made a professor in 1992. From 1983 to 1991 he was a legal administrator in the European Commission of Human Rights. He was a head of division of the European Court of Human Rights from 1991-2002 and in 1997 was the First Registrar of the Human Rights Chamber in Sarajevo.
