The term of office of the newly elected judges will begin on 1 February 2008 and that of the re-elected judges on 1   November 2007.   Judges are elected by the Assembly from lists of three candidates nominated by each State which has ratified the European Convention on Human Rights. Under the present terms of the Convention, judges are elected for six years and can be re-elected.   New judges   Albania – Ledi Bianku , born in Shkodër (Albania) in 1971; lawyer from 1994 to 2006, Legal Advisor to the President of Albania on matters of international law and human rights since May 2003; member of the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission (European Commission for Democracy through Law) since June 2006.   Cyprus – George Nicolaou , born in Larnaca (Cyprus) in 1945; Judge of the Supreme Court since 1995; President of the District Court from 1989 to 1995; Senior District Judge from 1988 to 1989.   Spain – Luis López Guerra , born in Leon (Spain) in 1947; Professor of Constitutional Law since 1995; Vice-President of the Constitutional Court from 1992 to 1995; Alternate Representative and Legal Expert for the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission (European Commission for Democracy through Law).   “The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” – Mirjana Lazarova Trajkovska , born in Strumica (“the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”) in 1963; Judge of the Constitutional Court since May 2003; member of the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission (European Commission for Democracy through Law) since 2004.   Georgia – Nona Tsotsoria , born in Batumi (Georgia) in 1973; lawyer; Deputy Public Prosecutor since August 2004; Assistant to Judge, Constitutional   Court, from 1996 to 1999 .   Hungary – András Sajo , born in Budapest (Hungary) in 1949; Researcher, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Law; expert for ECRI (European Commission against Racism and Intolerance) in 2006; founder and spokesperson of the Hungarian League for the Abolition of the Death Penalty, from 1988 to 1994.   Re–elected judges   Andorra – Josep Casadevall (Andorran), Judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 1 November 1998. Vice-President of Section from November 1998 to June 2000 and since November 2004 .   Armenia – Alvina Gyulumyan (Armenian), Judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 2 April 2003 .   Austria – Elisabet Steiner (Austrian), Judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 1 November 2001 .   Denmark – Peer Lorenzen (Danish), Judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 1 November 1998. Vice-President of Section from May 2003 to October 2004. President of Section since December 2005 .   Italy – Vladimiro Zagrebelsky (Italian), Judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 25 April 2001 .   Romania – Corneliu Bîrsan (Romanian), Judge of the European Court of Human Rights since 1 November 1998.
