He was a member of the Bar Council from 1996 to 1998 and secretary of the Bar Disciplinary and Administrative Committee from 1999 to 2001. Since June 2004 he has been a judge of the European Court of Human Rights.   Mr Spielmann’s term of office will end on 31 October 2013.   Judges are elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from lists of three candidates submitted by States which have ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.
