MOLDOVA AND RUSSIA Catan and 27 Others v. MOLDOVA AND RUSSIA Cercavschi and 98 Others v. MOLDOVA AND RUSSIA   The European Court of Human Rights is holding a Chamber hearing today Tuesday 9 June 2009 at 9 a.m. on the admissibility and merits in the cases of Caldare and 42 Others v. Moldova and Russia (application no. 8252/05), Catan and 27 Others v. Moldova and Russia (no. 43370/04) and Cercavschi and 98 Others v. Moldova and Russia (no. 18454/06).   The hearing will be broadcast from 2.30 p.m. on the Court’s Internet site ( http://www.echr.coe.int ).   Summary of the facts/complaints   The applicants,   all   Moldovan nationals, live in the   Transnistrian region. Each application concerns a separate Moldovan-language school and is brought by a group of parents, children and teachers.   The applicants complain that they have been subjected to harassment because of their desire for the schools to continue providing an education in the Moldovan language, using the Latin script, and in accordance with the Moldovan curriculum. They rely on Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment), Article 8 (right to respect for private and family life) and Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the European Convention on Human Rights, and on Article 2 of Protocol No. 1 (right to education) to the Convention.   Procedure   The applications were lodged with the European Court of Human Rights on 20 December 2004, 25 October 2004 and 4 April 2006 respectively.   Composition of the Court   The cases will be heard by a Chamber composed as follows:   Nicolas Bratza (the United Kingdom), President , Lech Garlicki (Poland), Anatoly Kovler (Russia), Ljiljana Mijović (Bosnia and Herzegovina), David Thór Björgvinsson (Iceland), Ján Šikuta (Slovakia), Mihai Poalelungi (Moldova), judges , Päivi Hirvelä (Finland), Giovanni Bonello (Malta), Ledi Bianku (Albania), Nebojša Vučinić (Montenegro), substitute judges , and also Lawrence Early , Section Registrar .   Representatives of the parties   Moldovan Government :   Vladimir Grosu , Agent ,   Ina Rusu , Adviser ;   Russian Government :   Georgy Matyushkin , Agent ,   Oxana Sirotkina , Oxana Yurchenko, Irina Koganova, Nikolay Fomin, Tatiana Kleymenova , Alexander Makhnev Advisers ;   Applicants :   Alexandru Postică , Ion Manole, Counsel ,   Doina Ioana Străisteanu, Adviser .   One of the applicants, Andrei Tihovschi , will also attend the hearing.     ***   After the hearing the Court will begin its deliberations, which are held in private.
