Portugal (application no. 24768/06) The applicants, João José Perdigão and Maria José Queiroga Perdigão, are Portuguese nationals who were born respectively in 1932 and 1933 and live in Lisbon. A 130,000   m² piece of land they owned was expropriated in 1995 to build a motorway. In the expropriation proceedings, in July 2003 the applicants were awarded as compensation just over 197,000   euros   (EUR); however, they had to pay for the legal costs 15,000   EUR more than that sum. Relying on Article   1 of Protocol   No.   1 (protection of property) to the European Convention on Human Rights, Mr and Ms   Perdigão complain of this having breached their right to the peaceful enjoyment of their possessions.     *** Press contacts Stefano Piedimonte (telephone: 00 33 (0)3 90 21 42 04)   Tracey Turner-Tretz (telephone: 00 33 (0)3 88 41 35 30)   Kristina Pencheva-Malinowski (telephone: 00 33 (0)3 88 41 35 70)   Céline Menu-Lange (telephone: 00 33 (0)3 90 21 58 77)   Frédéric Dolt (telephone: 00 33 (0)3 90 21 53 39) The European Court of Human Rights was set up in Strasbourg by the Council of Europe Member States in 1959 to deal with alleged violations of the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights.Citations
