Italy (application no. 30814/06)     CRUCIFIX: THE CASE OF LAUTSI v. ITALY WILL BE EXAMINED BY THE COURT’S GRAND CHAMBER     The five-judge panel of the Grand Chamber, meeting on 1 and 2 March 2010, accepted the referral request relating to the case of Lautsi v. Italy submitted by the Italian Government on 28 January 2010. The case will therefore be examined by the Grand Chamber, which will give its ruling in a final judgment.   Hearings before the Grand Chamber are not compulsory, but in practice one is almost invariably held. In addition, in the interests of the proper administration of justice, the President of the Court may invite any State Party to the Convention or any person concerned to submit written comments and, if appropriate, to take part in hearings (Article 36 of the European Convention on Human Rights).   The composition of the Grand Chamber will be determined later. None of the judges of the Chamber which gave judgment on 3 November 2009 is eligible to sit in the Grand Chamber, with the exception of its President and the judge elected in respect of Italy*.   The panel also accepted referral requests by both the Italian Government and the applicants in the case of Giuliani and Gaggio v. Italy (application no. 23458/02) on which a Chamber of the Court gave judgment on 25 August 2009.   In both cases the further proceedings will take several months. The Court’s press service is available for additional information.     *The term of office of the current Italian judge, Vladimiro Zagrebelsky, expires on 25 March. However, he may continue to serve until the arrival of his successor, Guido Raimondi, who was elected on 26 January 2010.     ***   This press release is a document produced by the Registry. It does not bind the Court. The judgments are available on its website ( http://www.echr.coe.int ).   Press contacts Stefano Piedimonte (tel: + 33 (0)3 90 21 42 04) or Tracey Turner-Tretz (tel: + 33 (0)3 88 41 35 30) Kristina Pencheva-Malinowski (tel: + 33 (0)3 88 41 35 70) Céline Menu-Lange (tel: + 33 (0)3 90 21 58 77) Frédéric Dolt (tel: + 33 (0)3 90 21 53 39) Nina Salomon (tel: + 33 (0)3 90 21 49 79)   The European Court of Human Rights was set up in Strasbourg by the Council of Europe Member States in 1959 to deal with alleged violations of the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights.  Citations
