He became a Doctor of Law at Tbilisi State University, in 1974 and has been Assistant Professor of Criminal Law at the university since 1976. He was a member of the State Constitutional Commission, 1993-95, and Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia from 1990-98.   His new term of office starts on 25 June 2002 and expires on 31 October 2007.
