He was eighty-two.   Judge Pettiti was first elected to the European Court of Human Rights in January 1980. He remained at the Court until 1 November 1998, when his term of office expired with the entry into force of Protocol N° 11 to the European Convention on Human Rights setting up a new, full-time Court. Mr Pettiti was a former President of the Paris Bar Association. He founded the Human Rights Training Institute of the Paris Bar. He was extremely active in many fields and much in demand as an expert on comparative law and human rights law.   The President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mr Luzius Wildhaber, said in a declaration in the Court’s hearing room today: “he played a major role in the elaboration of some of the Court’s most important cases. Mr Pettiti was an eminent jurist and a remarkable judge, who combined intellectual power with a sense of humanity.”  Citations
