All are friendly settlements.   Chamber (Section 2)   1)   120 Italian cases                   Friendly settlement   The European Court of Human Rights has agreed to strike out the following 120 cases concerning Italy after friendly settlements were agreed. The applicants complained of the length of civil proceedings to which they were a party, invoking Article 6 § 1 (right to a fair trial within a reasonable time) of the European Convention on Human Rights. Portugal (36776/97)                 Friendly settlement   Manuel Garcia Faria, a Portuguese national born in 1934 and living in Cascais (Portugal), complained under Article 6 § 1 of the Convention about the length of the civil proceedings to which he was a party, which started on 7 July 1988 and are still pending. The Court has agreed to strike out the case following a friendly settlement in which he is to be paid 800,000 Portuguese escudos (PTE) for any non-pecuniary damage and PTE 200,000 for costs and expenses. (Judgment in French)       Chamber (Section 4)   3.&4.     Bacelor de Sousa Machado v. Portugal No. 1 (37308/97)     Friendly settlements     Bacelor de Sousa Machado v. Portugal No. 2 ( 37311/97)   Gonçalo Bacelor de Sousa Machado, a Portuguese national born in 1935 and living in Lisbon, complained under Article 6 § 1 about the length of the civil proceedings to which he was a party. In the first case, the proceedings started on 21 June 1993 and, in the second, on 15 September 1993. Both are still pending. The Court has agreed to strike out the case following a friendly settlement in which the applicant is to be paid, in the first case, PTE 800,000 for any non-pecuniary damage and PTE 250,000 for costs and expenses, and, in the second, PTE 750,000 for any non-pecuniary damage and PTE 250,000 for costs and expenses.
