On 16 November 2000 the applicant was charged with taking part in a robbery committed by an organised gang. The applicant denied his participation in any crime.

On 30 December 1999 the Warsaw District Court ordered that the applicant be detained on remand on suspicion of robbery.

    On 8 May 2006 the applicant was arrested on suspicion of having committed armed robberies. 6.

    On 3 May 1996 his brother, Gabriel Carabulea, aged 27, died in police custody in Bucharest following his arrest on suspicion of robbery.

    On the same day, 16 July 2008, the applicant confessed to several counts of theft and robbery.

On 5 August 1999 he was indicted for robbery and questioned as an accused.

The applicant was indicted on charges of attempted homicide, armed robbery and aggravated theft. 10.

    In 2008 and 2009 a series of robberies and burglaries were committed in the Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Volyn and Zhytomyr regions, leading to several criminal investigations being initiated.

    On 30 August 2006 the applicant was arrested by the Department for Combating Organised Crime of Orenburg regional police (“the UBOP”) on suspicion of having committed the robberies. 8.

He was suspected of armed robberies, committed in an organised criminal group. The applicant was in hiding at the material time. 7.

    On 28 April 1995 the applicant was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and threats to kill, committed in an organised criminal group carrying out robberies, extorting money by threats

with intent to rob with arms, that is life imprisonment.

Having succumbed to pressure, on 21 November 2010 the applicant wrote “statements of surrender” incriminating himself in two robberies, which he had not committed.

    According to the applicant, he pleaded guilty to several counts of robbery under torture.

  He was arrested on 5 July 1993 and charged with two robberies to which he later confessed. He was detained until 8 December 1993 when he was released on bail.
